Social Networking, Or, Social Narcissism?

I’ve seen many people take a look at the notion that Social Networking websites and similar content are feeding a generation’s obsession with themselves.   With everything converging on customization, personalization, accessibility, multiple outlets pouring forth for self expression, whether it be forums, blogs, Twitter style services, FaceBooks or MySpaces, YouTube and other video websites…  there seems no end to one’s ability to be absorbed in…one’s own self.

It is no surprise that modern generations are being named the “ME” generation.  Websites have whole sections, even immensely popular news websites like Yahoo, where YouTubers can make the front page with “viral videos”.  But whether or not one makes the front page of Yahoo is irrelevant however, because everything you say and do can be, if you desire, broadcasted over the web and pasted on the front page of all your friends’ FaceBook, MySpace, or Twitter accounts, or all of these and more! Even at the same time!

What the long term affects of this egotistic trend?  I can’t even begin speculate.

I think it is kind of pathetic how a person can sit in front of a computer for hours and create and upload information about themselves on a Myspace page or something. I do not think that there is any harm to go online and meet people and talk about yourself. Or if you are going to create a page to create that page for your business, but to go online for hours and type in useless information about yourself such as you like dogs is just time wasting in my opinion.

Obsession or the new way of PR? Narcissism?
I think that while social networking can be an obsession it could also be the best way to market. I think it all has to do with balance. With anything in life we have to be careful not to over obsess on anything whether it be with food, shopping or social networking. With the bad comes the good though and a lot of theses social networking sites are becoming the new way of PR. I mean if you are a company and you have a free way to get information out about your product wouldn’t you use it? I just think that we have to remember to balance the things in life and make priorities.
